What to do.

It's now at least a month until an official Minecraft update, and in the meantime the server is kind of languishing - no one wants to embark on serious building projects until the map is finalised, but the map can't be finalised until there's a stable update with the new biome and terrain generation code. The prereleases are unfortunately buggy in terms of terrain generation (giant holes in the world are a problem), otherwise I'd just switch the server to 1.9preX ahead of the official update.

Given that the server's going to be there anyway, what would you like me to do with it until 1.9 goes live and we can start digging and building the megastructures we're all itching for?

Here are a few ideas, for your consideration and discussion:

  • Survival map - limited resources or perilous environments that make it a challenge to survive, let alone thrive. Example: SkyBlock.
  • Adventure map - puzzle adventure storytime! Generally intended to be played through once, as they often have traps and puzzles that don't reset. Example: The Wizard Burgmund.
  • Challenge map - players are pitted against one another or the environment to achieve an objective. Example: Vechs' Super Hostile Race for the Wool, Super Hostile Canopy Carnage.
  • Creative map - random seed, everyone is in Creative Mode. All the TNT you can eat.
  • Prerelease map - random seed, use one of the prerelease versions, doof around playing with the new features. Survival or Creative Mode, your choice.

Stuff like the Challenge or Adventure maps could be run as scheduled events, if people are up for that - pick a time, get on Ventrilo, let the hilarity ensue.

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?
